A computer fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted upon various existing configurations of SO3 gas feed in the DBI falling film reactor, with the purpose to identify and develop the optimal core standard design. Objective of the analyse was, specifically, focussed on different configurations:
- standard head design
- one “new design concept”
The gas flow distribution at the inlet of the reaction tubes was selected as key performance parameter.
The results of the CFD study indicate that the best gas flow distribution was obtained for the new design concept.
The new gas feed design concept will be implemented on factory scale by the end of the year to validate on field the results of the CFD. If the better gas distribution indicated by the CFD will be also confirmed by the product quality improvements, this new reactor inlet gas design will be standardized for the new reactors and proposed as retro-fitting for existing projects.
